Shabana Azmi hails Amitabh Bachchan for leading the way for senior actors in Hindi cinema

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi, enjoying a prolific second innings in her acting career, recently credited Amitabh Bachchan for paving the way for senior actors in Hindi cinema. With roles in Bollywood hits like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Ghoomer, as well as international projects such as Halo and What's Love Got To Do With It, Shabana continues to showcase her versatility on a global stage. In The Invincibles season 2, she expressed her gratitude towards Bachchan, highlighting his pivotal role in reshaping opportunities for older actors.

Shabana on Amitabh's impact

Reflecting on her career, Shabana said, “I really think it's got a lot to do with Amitabh Bachchan. Because Amitabh Bachchan has cleared the field for senior actors. The women's movement all over the world has also definitely influenced films somewhere or the other. (It's just me) being in the right place at the right time.”

Embracing age and acting

Shabana, who remains passionately committed to her craft, added, “I will die in my working boots. Whether someone gives me work or not, I don't know, but I will be an actor till I pass away. Because also what's happened is in the process, when the second wing happened, I got such different parts. The thing I love doing the most is acting. It's created a different kind of energy. I've never had a problem with my age. I've embraced my age. I never thought of looking like someone less than my age because the graceful thing is to age. Everyone does.”

A legacy of collaboration

Shabana and Amitabh shared the screen in notable films lik Amar Akbar Anthony and Parvarish, both released in 1977. Their collaborations were part of an era that saw Amitabh's rise as the 'angry young man,' a persona crafted by Shabana's husband Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan through iconic films such as Zanjeer, Sholay, Deewar, and Trishul.

Upcoming projects

Shabana Azmi will next be seen in the Netflix India crime drama Dabba Cartel. Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan is earning praise for his role as Ashwatthama in Nag Ashwin's Telugu dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD. Fans can also look forward to his Tamil debut in Vettaiyan, where he will reunite with Rajinikanth 33 years after their film Hum.
