Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece Sharmin Segal faces performance criticism in Heeramandi; disables Instagram comments

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali forayed into the OTT space with Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar on Netflix. Premiered on May 1, the series has opened to mix reviews with criticism coming in from all quarters regarding the storyline and performances. The lavish production design and Bhansali's signature visual grandeur have garnered appreciation. However, historical accuracy and the show's portrayal of the red-light district in pre-independence India have sparked debate. One of the main protagonists of the series is Bhansali’s niece Sharmin who has found herself in the crosshairs of online negativity.

Sharmin has faced the brunt of an additional criticism – nepotism. Her casting as Alamzeb, daughter of Manisha Koirala's character Mallikajaan, has reignited discussions about family ties influencing Bollywood opportunities. The online response to Sharmin's performance has been harsh for some viewers. To escape the relentless negativity, she has taken the step of disabling comments on her Instagram account.

Sharmin has previously assisted Bhansali on various projects like Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Gangubai Kathiawadi. Her assistant directorial experience also includes Omung Kumar's Mary Kom.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar boasts an ensemble cast including established names like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Aditi Rao Hydari. It also stars Fardeen Khan, Adhyayan Suman, Shekhar Suman and Taha Shah.
